Q: What is it that Matthew James hopes to accomplish through the Cello brand?

A: Our intention is to develop products that have the ability to recreate the original sound of instruments and voices as captured on the finest recordings, and to allow the possibility of restoring natural sound to recordings with sonic problems.

The sonic capability of the system should be such that the benefits of using Cello equipment are obvious whatever software the listener chooses. So many people who I meet believe that they could not hear the difference between a good system and any other, or that it wouldn't matter with the type of music they listen to. In my experience, it seldom takes more than a few seconds for someone listening to music on a Cello system to know that there is something very good about the sound they are hearing, and that it's different from whatever they had heard before. That the artist's intentions are being communicated in a way that makes sense even though it was not ever correctly communicated previously, through lesser systems.

And, as equally important, our intention is to manufacture products that achieve day-to-day, week-to week, year-to-year stability in performance, and exceptional reliability due to the quality of the design, construction techniques, and premium parts used.

Q: What is it that a Cello product, or a Cello system, sounds like?

A: One of the ways in which Cello has distanced itself from its fellow high-end companies has been in the ability to re-create the physical aspect of listening to music. It is my firm belief that it matters not what other positive characteristics a component or system might have, if it does not convey the physical nature of music. This is evidenced by deep, solid, articulated bass; smooth overall response with no peaks; extended high frequency response with no edge; sound which fills the room and envelops the listener, yet provides excellent imaging and reproduction of acoustic space; and studio type dynamic range with performance in the 115-125dB SPL range when required without distortion.
